Not too long ago in May of this year we celebrated Orca`s 13th birthday. She still was doing very well for her age. She loved to play with the water hose to cool off and with her ball. Not too long ago we took videos of her and her Barrett friends and posted these videos on facebook.

Her being full of life did change during the heat in late summer. We did notice that she was getting weak in her behind, which does happen to a lot of GSD, once they become that old. Lots of people think, that this is a hip problem, but it is not. It is a back or spine problem similar to old people, when they are getting problems with the back or spine. The spine can cause these symptoms. When this happens we as the owner have to realize that a GSD being 13 years old is like a human at the age of 90. So we have to accept this and be thankful, that a dog became that old, which often is not the case, especially when we talk about cancer or other sickness a dog can get during his life. As long as a dog has still quality of life, this is fine, but the moment when the dog hardly cannot get up anymore or relief itself, then the time has come to let the dog go. In this case we do have to think of the dog and not of us. We do not want an animal to suffer in any way.

Unfortunately this was the case with our Orca. We did let her go over the rainbow bridge in late summer of this year. Hundemama and her family were very sad when this happened. When she loses one of her four legged friends, she is not able to post this on the webpage or media right away, like lots of people do these days. She is still old school and has to go through the sadness alone when she looses such a wonderful friend.
We are so happy, that we have Enza and Gwendi out of this special bloodline. The families who have an offspring of either Enza and Gwendi do understand us when we say, that these dogs are special. Not just dogs, special dogs, because they are so smart and so beautiful. They want to please us, they want to be our friend.

In our hearts Orca will be always with us and she will live through her daughter Enza and granddaughter Gwendi.
